Since 1997 Chris has been responsible for guiding grantmaking at the National Geographic Education Foundation--awarding funds to improve the geographic literacy of U.S. and Canadian schoolchildren. The Foundation's mission is to "teach people how to care for the planet." In addition to directing the Foundation's grantmaking, Chris oversees the My Wonderful World campaign. He also leads the Foundation's state and federal legislative advocacy.
Raised in the South, Chris received a double major undergraduate degree in biology and English Literature, followed by a master's degree in English literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Chris is the proud godfather of four boys, a guitarist in a mid-life crisis band, a recovering distance runner, an avid movie buff, and a relentless consumer of books on natural history and popular science. He writes and speaks regularly on education issues.
